HC After Dark & The Multi-Hyphenate Resident
It’s still only been 3 months, but this thing has a real pulse. Our first HC After Dark event in Philly exceeded all of our expectations. We were able to bring together a group of residents and treat them to a truly special night, focusing not on what specialty they are in or what their Step scores are, but what drives them. Joy, artistry, and human connection should be core to the physician experience, not an afterthought, and that is what we are setting out to do. Because we believe that a well-rounded physician who is supported beyond their white coat, is a happier and more effective physician.
Of course this event would not have been possible without the support of PearsonRavitz and Clove, two companies that actually put their money where their mouth is and make real efforts to support physicians and healthcare workers. We plan to take this show on the road - so stay tuned for our next event.

Our New Chief Mentoring Officer
Brian F. Hoeflinger, MD
We are thrilled to announce the addition of Dr. Hoeflinger to the HC, in his capacity as our Chief Mentoring Officer. Dr. Hoeflinger brings nearly 30 years of experience as a practicing neurosurgeon and an incredible ability to pass down his knowledge to the next generation. Stay tuned for all of the different ways that you will be able to connect with Dr. Hoeflinger, but in the meantime check out his Youtube channel if you haven’t already watched his videos.
Our New Artist In Residence!
The ballots are in, and our next Artist in Residence has officially been chosen!
And it is….Maheetha Bharadwaj, MD! As a dancer, Maheetha has been learning Bharathanatyam, an ancient Indian Classical Dance Form, since the age of five. In college, she transitioned to dancing on competitive hip-hop dance teams. She also used her passion for dance in community service, working with a local grassroots organization to teach science through dance. In her gap year doing hematology oncology research at Memorial Sloan Kettering, she danced on Project D, placing at competitions like Elements and Defining Rhythm.
In medical school, she continued intersecting dance and medicine for her capstone project, where-by she would choreograph a Bharathanatyam dance narrative depicting the journey of a patient diagnosed with cancer. For her project with HC, she would like to continue depicting complex medical narratives through dance.
This does mean that submissions for Summer/Fall AiR are closed, but our team continues to review incoming work as future opportunities arise. If you'd like to share your portfolio with us, we’d love to see it. We were overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of our Artist in Residence submissions. And we think it would be a shame not to highlight as many of these incredible artists as we can. So we are cooking up the next best thing to platform incredible art….
EX VIVO
Medicine is what happens in vivo. But this is what happens after.
The new interdisciplinary art magazine from the Hippocratic Collective. We’re publishing work by residents, fellows and medical students at the intersection of medicine, art, and lived experience.
We’re looking for work that is sharp, honest, and original. Visual art, essays, poetry, photography, comics, memoir fragments, anatomical sketches, mixed media - if it resonates with life inside or after medicine, it belongs here.

Fleishman Is In Trouble: A Story of Birth Trauma
By Sacha McBain, PhD
Fleishman Is in Trouble offers a raw depiction of postpartum PTSD. It shows a woman trying to make sense of her own alienation, failing to find support, and ultimately blaming herself for not being able to move on - and the people in her life follow suit.
Fighting The Dangers of H.R. 1
Unless significant changes are made, this bill will do nothing short of devastate our already fragile healthcare system. If you work in the healthcare industry like me and, also like me, are busy with the day to day work of patient care and don't have time to read legalese for hours, I will offer you a brief summary.
The Halstead/Gervais Principles
By Frances Mei Hardin, MD
The Gervais Principle suggests that organizations are inherently pathological, creating a culture of “individualistic Darwinism”, or more plainly, a dog-eat-dog rugged capitalism. Within these organizations are 3 levels of employees; Sociopaths, Clueless, and Losers.
